Rob Wilson MP Joins Flappers in Call for More Women MPs
On the 80th anniversary of men and women receiving equality at the ballot box, Rob Wilson MP joined with activists outside Parliament in a call for more women in Parliament.
Women currently make up just 20 per cent of the House of Commons – a figure virtually unchanged in a generation.
This comes as new research from the Electoral Reform Society reveals that, despite efforts by all parties, not enough has been done to increase the number of women MPs for the next General Election.
Eight decades on from the ‘Flapper Vote’, the Society’s research shows that in all likely scenarios, the number of women MPs will at best remain the same and is most likely to fall.
Rob Wilson MP said, “We are clear in the Conservatives that we want our Party to properly represent all elements of society. We are making rapid strides in attracting more women to winnable seats and there is no doubt there will be many more women Conservative MPs after the next election. However, we need to do more, as do all political parties, to attract women into politics and support their progress.”
