New Council Chief Executive has plans for a strong local economy.
As the chief executive of local authorities in three countries, Susan Law has considerable experience in leading and managing the delivery of a range of community services and has implemented major reforms in New Zealand, Australia, Republic of South Africa and the UK.
Wokingham Borough Council wants to become a flagship authority for its residents. This means an authority that ensures the borough has the best quality of life, is progressive and nationally competitive.
Susan said: “The Wokingham Borough is a hugely attractive and dynamic place but with that comes challenges in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life. I’m aware there is intense pressure for development, yet continued competitiveness depends on a skilled workforce, retaining a high quality of life and avoiding transport chaos.
I will be working with staff and councillors to take the Council from
strength to strength in its quest to be among the best in the UK. One of my immediate priorities is to gain widespread ownership of a far sighted, progressive vision and plan for the long term. An important part of this will be exploring ways of supporting and maintaining a strong local economy.
Achieving this vision can only happen with the support and partnership with business. As an authority we have to play our part in providing a stable and facilitative environment for businesses to thrive.
I have already met with some businesses at a Council Business Forum last November. It was valuable listening to people talk about the issues and opportunities ahead. I believe it is vital the Council and its partners work closely with all businesses and value highly the huge contribution all our organisations make to the local economy.
It is really important to develop strong links with the local business community and I will be looking to do this through future events and meetings with employer groups and individual businesses during the coming weeks and months”.
