World Fair Trade Day
This year the theme of World Fair Trade Day is 'Kids need Fair Trade'. Fair Trade aims are to fundamentally change economic and social structures and to empower marginalised people in order to help them escape the poverty trap.

If adults are paid a fair price for their work, they can afford to send their children to school, and the children themselves can have a childhood rather than having to work to support their families.

In India child labour is illegal, though many see it as a traditional practice. The result being that laws are rarely enforced. In Delhi child labourers who work in cramped, ill-ventilated workshops are routinely forced to work 12 hour days. This results in them working, eating and sleeping in the same location.

In association to World Fair Trade day, London will be receiving the Fair Trade Organisation Mark banner which at the end of the journey will have visited 45 countries. On the 10th and 11th May a double decker open topped bus will tour round London to different Fair Trade Organisations. Various activities will also be happening along with way. One supporting company called People Tree will be hosting a fashion show on top of the bus. On the 12th May the banner will be displayed by the Canterbury Fair Trade group during a footprints fair.

For further details regarding the events on the 10th/11th May, please contact Kate. For the Canterbury event Rick.
