Maidenhead Townsfolk demand more local food
The enthusiastic customers visiting the second successful High Street Farmers’ Market on the last Saturday of August were able to express their appreciation of local food by signing a petition calling for a permanent local food shop in the High Street.
The petition is being organised by members of Transition Town Maidenhead, who have come together to raise public awareness on the twin issues of Climate Change and Peak Oil. They have a chance of obtaining Big Lottery funding for a High Street local food outlet(1). In order to support their application they need to demonstrate that there is demand for this.
In just one hour at the High Street market Suzy Kirkwood and Ngaire Takano obtained over 100 signatures and they are hoping to get more at next Sunday’s regular Farmers’ Market at Grove Road Car Park. The petition will be available at the tea stall for visitors to sign.
Anyone not able to get to the market can also sign the petition on line at

For further information:
1.Our Shed will be one stop shopping experience for customers who wish to support and purchase locally produced products, artisan produced, organic, free range and biodynamic on a regular basis.
It will be the first full time farmers’ market promoting food from Berkshire and the Thames Valley.
It will be run as a co-operative but farmers and other people wishing to sell produce wiil not need to man the stalls themselves. They wiil automatically be credited every kilo sold on their behalf by those on the floor. This therefore will enable the farmers and producers to concentrate on production .
The on-site restaurant will, as far as possible, source its ingredients from the wide range of food and drink available on the shop floor, hence reducing additional costs, but also enabling local cash to be recycled throughout the whole business. Thus the Chef will use quality ingredients (sourced directly from the traders) which in turn will result in high quality food. This foods will have the added bonus of not having traveled hundreds, if not thousands of miles and thus have low environmental impact.
2. Transition Town Maidenhead
are a group who have come together to raise public awareness on the twin issues of Climate Change and Peak Oil.
We want to engage with all interested community groups, businesses and individuals in addressing the consequent impacts on energy use, energy supply, food production, travel, education and housing in Maidenhead. We want to build a strong, resilient community.
We are doing this via public meetings, film showings, smaller meetings with interested individuals, dedicated website, social networking websites and re-skilling.
We want to oversee, with them, the production of Maidenhead’s Energy Oil Descent Plan.
