Transition Towns is about communities working for themselves to find the best way to minimise their impact on the environment and to reduce their future dependence on fossil fuels to meet their everyday needs and sustain their quality of life.
Transition Town concept began at Totnes, Devon informally in late 2005, when Rob Hopkins and Naresh Giangrande initiated a series of talks and film screenings to raise awareness about the issue of peak oil. In September 2006, at an event called "The Official Unleashing" of TTT, was attended by 400 people. TTT have since delivered an extensive programme of events with many of the leading speakers in the field of sustainability having visited Totnes to contribute. Transition Towns concept believes that only by involving all of us - residents, businesses, public bodies, community organisations and schools - will we come up with the most innovative, effective and practical ideas, and have the energy and skills to carry them out. Help support Transition Town Maidenhead and WestBerks. |
