The Day The Football Died
George Best, the fifth Beatle, the embodiment of the rock ‘n’ roll footballer, the icon who – in his own words – “took football from the back page and put it on the front page”, has died, aged 59.

The rightfully glowing, and sometimes painfully honest, obituaries highlight the sheer brilliance of George Best; The Footballer, the audacity and innovation of George Best; The Icon and the inevitability and tragedy of George Best; The Drinker.

Best’s freedom of expression on the football pitch, combined with his good looks and long hair, made him not only an icon for football fans and young girls but a hero for rebels everywhere.

From the terraces through bars and clubs to the charts, rock ‘n’ roll embraced George as one of its own, with songs and albums inspired by his talent and attitude cropping up since his earliest playing days.

The Wedding Present choose to name their album ‘George Best’ (featuring a classic pose of a fully kitted up Best on the cover), Ray Davies wrote ‘Dedicated Follower of Fashion’ for his friend George and Don Fardon took his paean to Best ‘Belfast Boy’ into the top forty.

For an indication of how well respected and admired Best is amongst the rock glitterati we need look no further than one of the most acclaimed albums of all time; Oasis’s ‘Definitely Maybe’. Amongst all of the studied rock ‘n’ roll props on the cover, a portrait of Best takes pride of place. This from the Gallaghers – committed Man City fans!

So, thanks George for the football, and cheers for the rock ‘n’ roll! Who else, other than Keith Richard perhaps, could get away with the immortal lines: "I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered."
