International Wine Challenge 2007
Arborfield-based Vintage Roots have been supplying organic wines and beers for over 20 years. Their range of highly acclaimed champagnes come from Champagne Fleury, located in Courteron in Aube, an area known for the pinot noir grape. At this year’s International WINE Challenge, Fleury champagnes scooped a number of trophies and awards, including Best Biodynamic Wine.

Neil Palmer of Vintage Roots explains: “The International Wine Challenge is the world’s biggest wine competition, so we’re delighted that Fleury – who have supplied us with champagne for many years – have done so well. The AOC Vintage Fleury 1996 won a Gold Medal (Best Young Vintage), Trophy, and Best Biodynamic Wine – a new category this year. The 4 wines entered by Fleury into the competition won a total of 6 medals”.

Specialists in organic wines, Vintage Roots stock a wide range of Fleury champagnes. The vineyards are located close to Chablis which results in a burgundy style champagne, typically very dry. All Fleury wines are completely biodynamic, being made from grapes which are cultivated without the use of synthetic fungicides, herbicides or fertilizers.

The award winning Vintage Fleury is described as having ‘an exuberant praline and hazelnut nose giving way to a complex palate of baked apple, homemade bread, toasted nuts and honey’. A world class vintage which is expected to continue maturing nicely in the bottle.

If you’re interested in finding out more about organic wines, Vintage Roots are holding a festive wine-tasting on 24th November at the River & Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames. It’s an all-day event from 10am to 5pm and an ideal opportunity to sample some exciting organic wines, beers, and ciders. “You’re welcome to join us, whether you pop in for ten minutes or stay for a couple of hours” says Neil, “We hope you’ll mark the date in your diary, and look forward to seeing you there.”
