Marlow businessman succeeds in gruelling BBC Dragons' Den
Dominic Killinger, MD of Square Mile, successfully navigates Dragon infested waters…
Dominic Killinger, Managing Director of Marlow-based Square Mile, secured new investment after facing the panel of Dragons in the first episode of the new BBC2 series of Dragons’ Den last night.
The show, aired at 8pm on 15 November on BBC2 showed Dominic involved in a grueling interview with the Dragons with only three minutes to pitch his ideas for developing the Square Mile brand to the panel of business experts.
Peter Jones and Theo Paphitis were the first to see the huge potential that Square Mile had to offer and agreed to co-invest in the business, but only after all the Dragons bar one made an offer to invest.
“This was a momentous opportunity to pitch my business to five of the UK’s most respected business icons as well as the British public,” said Dominic, “With such a short time for the Dragons to make a decision to invest, they take no prisoners getting to the point of your business and it’s strengths and weaknesses in minutes. Putting forward a convincing business case in such a short timeframe is extremely tough; five very successful entrepreneurs literally push you to your limits; it really does live up to its Dragons’ Den name. Getting this investment, as well as Peter and Theo’s input, has really endorsed my belief that Square Mile is firmly on the road to success.”
Square Mile provides Wi-Fi to sailors around Britain in the UK’s 50 largest and most prestigious marinas. The current usage by sailors has topped 1.35 million minutes per month.
Peter Jones, CEO Phones International Group and Theo Paphitis of Ryman Stationers and La Senza, two of the five elite business experts on Dragons’ Den, commented: “Dominic made a compelling presentation and succinctly delivered a slick pitch which showed clearly the potential in this opportunity” said Jones. “On first look, the business seemed very niche, but within the space it operates that’s clearly a strength, which I am keen to help develop” added Paphitis.
As a result of this investment, Square Mile is poised to grow the brand across Europe and will launch a VoiP partnership on their network as well as CCTV cameras for onboard yachts. The company is also developing the UK’s first sailing portal providing every piece of crucial information a sailor could ever need, from quality tidal and weather information, to the very latest deals from chandleries.
As a result of securing this investment, Square Mile is now recruiting Advertising Sales Agents across the UK. Contact 01628 539451 for more details.
