Spring clean your marketing!
Spring clean your marketing!!
Did your mother have an annual ritual spring clean of your house at about this time of year? Mine did. She emptied all the cupboards in the kitchen and cleaned them, she moved all the furniture in the bedrooms and cleaned beneath the beds, she cleaned the inside and outside of the windows on the same day…!
My cleaning tends to be in bursts, but I think her blitz approach was a good one. She knew exactly what she had in her kitchen cupboards at the end and had probably had a good throw out of things we didn’t need. The house was spotless from top to bottom for some time after she had finished.
Have you thought about taking this spring cleaning approach to your marketing activities? How long is it since you stepped back from your busy business life and assessed the effectiveness and value of your marketing? Are there some activities which have really gone past their sell-by date and are no longer effective that should be thrown out? Is your web site several years old and looking a little dated or are your marketing materials starting to look a bit tired? Perhaps the papers have stopped writing about you because you are sending the same old stories to them.
Taking the spring clean approach to your marketing can only be beneficial. Every business should have regular reviews of their marketing to make the maximum impact. The needs of clients and customers change and your business evolves, so the most effective marketing tools for your business can change. What worked for you yesterday may not be as effective today.
At Heddon Communications, we have just completed a marketing spring clean for a client, carrying out a total audit of all of their activities and working through with them what works and what doesn’t in achieving their business objectives. They had a robust programme of marketing activity over the last few years, but it had become less effective. We helped them to refocus and came up with some new suggestions. Sometimes all it needs is fresh eyes to see things in a slightly different way and help put together a renewed programme of activity. For others, perhaps it is time for a radical new approach.
It’s the time of year for a spring clean in your house, so why not apply the same process to your marketing. Get all of your marketing activities out for a review, dust them down and throw out the things that have gone past their sell-by date. Identify what works and what else you need to do. You’ll feel much better after you have done it – just like having a newly spring cleaned house – and your marketing can become effective again!
