Companies from across the region celebrated their success at the 17th annual Thames Valley Business Awards, held on November 17.

The event, attended by more than 350 local business leaders and held at Reading’s Royal Berkshire Conference Centre, attracted entries from as far apart as Reading, High Wycombe, Newbury and Oxford.

Guest of honour, Lord Digby Jones, former director general of the CBI and well-known champion of British industry, set the tone for the evening when he emphasised the importance of learning basic skills, and called on businesses to reach out and offer training and apprenticeships for tomorrow’s generation of employees.

“As successful companies we owe it to them to reach out and help take people to a place where they can achieve. We are the wealth creators and we need to be doing things in a way that we take the whole of society with us,” he told the audience.

Thirty-six companies were shortlisted for the six prestigious awards and David Murray, Awards chairman, praised all those who entered, saying the judges had had a tough decision choosing from impressive stack of entries.

“Your companies fly the flag for this region of ours, the Thames Valley, the powerhouse of enterprise, entrepreneurialism and corporate endeavour,” he said.

And there was a special thank you for the support of the six sponsors – Pitmans, Deloitte, Vail Williams, DediPower, The Royal Bank of Scotland and James Cowper.

Walking away with the title of Thames Valley Business of the Year Award was Reading-based Symantec; Wireless Logic from Marlow won The Dynamic Business Award; Andrews & Wykeham from Basingstoke won Thames Valley Export Award; Phabrix, from Burghclere, near Newbury, won SME of the Year; Maidenhead’s SDL won Business Management Team; and Best Company to Work For was won by Bottomline Technologies, based in Reading.
