Thames Valley Business of the Year

Judges seek all-round approach from the Thames Valley Business of the Year

Deadlines are looming for entries to the Thames Valley Business Awards 2009 and the search is on to find the Thames Valley Business of the Year. The award is sponsored by leading Thames Valley law firm Pitmans, and we asked managing partner Christopher Avery, what companies should be doing to impress the judges.

“Our award is different because we’re looking for those companies which fulfil our criteria across four clear sectors – financial success, employees, innovation and impact on the local community,” said Avery.

“That means a company which might be doing very well in terms of profit, but doesn’t take any form of social responsibility, won’t be the one the judges vote for. Our winner doesn’t have to be the biggest company, or from any particular sector, but it does have to show us it takes an all-round approach and has a real passion for what it is doing.

“Of course, we want companies which are successful and can demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and innovative ideas, but it’s also important that they look after their staff and provide support to the local community – either in the shape of charitable works or through cultural events.

“During these times of recession we feel this is an excellent time to tell people how great a company is. This region remains the cauldron of the country’s high technology industries, the home of many manufacturing companies and is a base for a wide variety of excellent service and professional organisations – we want to give these companies the opportunity to excel.”

Pitmans has sponsored the Business of the Year category since the awards began in 1994 and top names who have walked away with the trophy in the past include Sun Microsystems, Connells, 02 (UK) and Barracuda.

In 2008, entries came from areas as diverse as travel and technology, recruitment, toys and the financial sector, proving that anyone can enter as long as they meet the criteria.

Last year’s winner was Crowthorne-based business DriveTech, which proved that persistence really does pay off. Two years previously, it had been highly commended and in 2007 rose to second place, before finally walking away with top honours in 2008.

The closing date for this year’s awards is September 30. For more details and to complete your entry form online, visit www.businessawards.co.uk
