Internet Best Practice in the UK
Nominet are asking businesses across the UK to enter a competition which aims to identify examples of internet best practice. Nomination categories include access, security, diversity, and openness.
As participants in the international Internet Governance Forum (IGF), Nominet are keen to establish a similar forum dedicated solely to UK businesses. Organisations from both public and private sectors are encouraged to put themselves forward as examples of internet best practice.
Nominet, who run the UK’s domain registry, announced the competition last week. Nominees should be able to demonstrate proficiency in any of the following areas:
• Access
• Security (including methods of online authentication)
• Diversity (addressing language or literacy problems)
• Openness (increasing the availability of information online)
Head of the UN’s advisory group on internet governance, Markus Kummer, said “International co-ordination cannot work without co-ordination at the national level."
Although the IGF has no decision-making power, a ‘free dialogue’ scenario exists whereby those involved are “not afraid that the wrong decision might be taken”.
Nominet's policy director, Emily Taylor, added: “The context for the Best Practice Challenge is a collaborative effort by Nominet and the Department of Trade and Industry to create a UK IGF. This will be more effective than individual efforts. We are hoping that a UK IGF will help influence the agenda of forthcoming [IGF] meetings.”
Competition winners will enjoy massive exposure, and Nominet are quick to point out that small businesses are welcome to participate. Entries must be in by 31st July and an entry form can be downloaded from the Best Practice Challenge website.
