Broadband Good for Work-Life Balance
A recent report from BT claims high-speed broadband internet connections are helping small business owners enjoy a better work-life balance than ever before. Over 80% of business owners surveyed said they directly attributed flexibility, increased mobility, and remote access to the availability of broadband.
The BT study, entitled 'State of the Small Business Nation 2007', interviewed more than 400 small businesses throughout the UK, finding that almost all of them had home broadband at home – a significant factor in improving the crucial work-life balance.
Indeed 82% of those surveyed claimed that broadband had a definite impact on their quality of life at work and home. The availability of inexpensive, reliable broadband connection has opened small businesses to opportunities for remote working and flexibility, not to mention the increased efficiency of working with a faster connection.
The broadband issue was just one area covered by the study, which was aimed at defining the driving forces behind the UK’s small business community. It looked at a range of issues including technology, motivation, productivity, and efficiency. Broadband was certainly acknowledged by most as a revolutionary breakthrough in terms of work flexibility. More than 95% of respondents said they used broadband at home, suggesting a move to more flexible working hours – indeed almost half of sole traders said they were actively creating a healthier work-life balance for themselves.
Almost half of small business expect to start using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services in the next year. A spokesman for BT Business added “Britain’s small businesses are critical to the health of the UK economy, and broadband is becoming central in helping them to thrive without compromising other aspects of their lives.”
