Broadband Expands Worldwide
Broadband appears to be entering a new phase of super-development. Statistics tells us more than 250 million households were broadband-connected by the end of 2006, but these figures are only one part of the story. Broadband connections are getting faster as new technology takes speed to a new level.
The broadband market has been expanding rapidly. The US and China are the highest users (54.6 million and 46.6 million households respectively) although some countries like Japan and South Korea are already moving on to the next phase in broadband development: fibre optic connection. In these countries, broadband users are swapping their old DSL (digital subscriber line) technology for the new, faster, higher-bandwidth optical fibre technology.
This represents a huge leap forward in terms of speed. A broadband user in Japan can access 50- 100 mbps for a price comparable to 1 mbps in other countries. This is part of a deliberate policy to install fibre optic connections to homes throughout the country. 2006 figures claim there are 7.5 million ‘fibre to the home’ (FTTH) subscribers in Japan, making them world leaders in this respect.
No doubt this fibre optical technology will find it’s way to the US and Europe before long, making traditional broadband connections look as antiquated as dial-up systems. It is estimated that 100 millions US households will have broadband by 2011.
All of which opens up infinite possibilities to online marketers. Greater bandwidth allows for speed and innovative marketing tactics which will undoubtedly feed the growing expansion of broadband across the world over the next few years.
