Support Your Local Food Hero
Who do you know that makes that extra effort to produce high-quality foods that put mass-produced supermarket fare to shame? Whether it’s your local butcher, baker, or… cheesemaker, UKTV would love to hear about them. They are currently searching for Britain's Local Food Hero 2007.

The nationwide search takes place across 11 episodes of the popular UKTV show. Celebrity Chef Gary Rhodes will be assessing the nominees – all small-scale businesses that exhibit pride and passion for their craft and refuse to compromise on quality in favour of making a fast profit through mass production techniques. The show is a tribute to Britain's independent shops, farm stalls, artisan producers, cafes, pubs, restaurants, and small businesses.

Each episode of the show will focus on a specific region of the country, featuring nominees which the public have voted for: businesses that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to producing, selling or serving great food. A regional winner will be chosen from each programme and the 10 finalists will compete for the for the UK Local Food Hero 2007 title. As well as the honour of winning the coveted award, the winner also receives £40,000 to help towards the continued success of their business.

There has certainly been an increased interest in good quality local produce in recent years. TV cookery shows focus more and more on seasonal ingredients, traditional recipes, and independent suppliers. Many feel the large supermarket chains are forcing smaller suppliers out of business so there is a real need to celebrate the independent supplier dedicated enough to make a difference to what we buy and eat.
