Support Your Local Traders
Independent locally-owned businesses play an essential role in maintaining a lively local economy by helping to keep financial resources in the local area rather than at some distant corporate headquarters. What’s more, they use the goods and services of other local businesses.

Sometimes it seems as if our city centres are becoming clones of each other – the same faceless names can be found in almost every high street in the country: Tescos, Boots, Top Shop, Next, Starbucks... the list goes on. In most cases these big names follow a set formula which dictates everything from the style of the building, the colour of the staff uniforms, the décor, and the products on offer. With their increased economies of scale, these big guys are laying down a serious challenge for smaller independent businesses who have to rely on customer loyalty and the personal touch to stay in business.

All of which poses a threat to local communities by contributing to the steady loss of social, cultural and economic strength. Small and locally owned businesses are seen by many as the bridge to a more sustainable and just society - the mainstay of the community's economy.

Local business people make an enormous and positive contribution to the quality of life in the community by creating jobs, boosting the local tax base, which in turn helps to improve local facilities such as schools and parks, which in turn contributes to the general quality of life within the community.

The big chains have done a good job of convincing people that they are the least expensive, but often they are not. Comparing the prices of DIY products for example, you often find your local hardware store offer better prices than the big household names. Many big chains carry out research to determine which items customers are more likely to price compare – they can then mark these down, whilst other products may be marked up accordingly.

Simply put, if you buy from a big chain, your money leaves the local community. Buy from your local traders and your money is likely to be spent again and again in the local economy. The message is clear: Support Your Local Traders !
