The Meaning of Words - July
Welcome to the July issue of The Meaning of Words from SJ Copy. We’ve recently returned from a lovely holiday in Verona, Italy. Shame we couldn’t have stayed! I do hope that you all have/had lovely holidays.
Words add value to your business
Every word that you read in any form of marketing literature has been carefully chosen to appeal to the reader. A website needs to be sprinkled with the right keywords - a brochure needs to expand on the product or service, a press release needs to be to the point. So it’s a good idea to think very carefully when choosing the right words to promote your product or service. Try and think of as many synonyms as possible. You can use the internet to help you out -

Of course, you can always use the book version too!
Choosing the right style
Before pen can be put to paper, or in this day and age, fingers to the keyboard, it is important to know the style of writing for your literature. By “style” I mean the language that will be used. Ask yourself the following question: Who is the literature aimed at? Is it businessmen, teenagers, car-owners or mothers? Once you know this then the style will evolve; whether it’s informal, formal, chatty or technical, it needs to appeal to your intended audience. The key is to think carefully and test some styles out; ask friends and family for their opinions.
Something to think about
Take the time to decide on your target audience. Couple this with your USP and your style should come naturally. Use positive language and avoid ambiguous words.
