The Meaning of Words - June
June 2007
Welcome to the second issue of “The Meaning of Words” from SJ Copy. I hope you have all been well and enjoyed the first newsletter.

Words are even more important
In this day and age we are using words more and more. Emailing, texts and websites seem to have replaced the telephone and face to face communication. So it is even more important that we use the right words in our marketing literature.

Busy, busy, busy
We are all so busy trying to win customers that we may unintentionally neglect our literature. I cannot stress how important it is to get it looking right before you start using it. Over the weekend I saw two examples of poor spelling, one of them being on the side of a van! Any mistake, no matter how minor will influence the decision of any potential customer.

How copywriters get started
Copywriters write for all sorts of literature and businesses, so it’s important that we understand our target audience before putting pen to paper. In most cases we are writing for two sets of people – our clients and their audience.

To help us out we prepare a brief. The brief is compiled by asking our clients a series of questions. These questions can include: What medium is the literature for? Who is the intended audience? What are the features and benefits of your product or service? What tone of voice should the literature have? Once we have all these details we can then put on our creative hats.

Something to think about
Now that you know your USP (Unique Selling Point) you need to know how to make it appeal to your customers. The customer needs to know how it will change their lives. If possible use the word “you” frequently so they feel as if they are being spoken to. If it is a technical product or service, really “home-in” on the benefits and where possible use examples.
