Sharpen Your Axe at the Silent Partners - Business Gym |
What do you mean - Sharpen Your Axe?
To know when it is time to stop and sharpen yourself is vital to sustain your performance. You may still be getting by, but is it requiring more effort? Just think how much more you could be doing with a sharper axe and that same additional effort. In Explanation: A man approached the foreman of a logging crew and asked for a job. "Let's see you fell a tree." replied the foreman. The man stepped forward, and skilfully felled a great tree quicker than any of the current loggers. Impressed, the foreman exclaimed, "You can start Monday." Thursday afternoon the foreman approached the man. "I am afraid we're letting you go today” he said. “You've fallen behind. Our daily felling charts show that you've dropped from first place on Monday to last place today. “ Startled, the man replied, "But I'm a hard worker," he objected. "I arrive first, leave last, and even have worked through my coffee breaks!" The foreman, thought for a minute and then asked, "Have you been sharpening your axe?" "No sir, I've been working too hard to take time for that!" the man replied. We all often fall into this trap. We get so busy that we don't take time to "sharpen the axe." Eventually we forget how to stay sharp? We all need time to relax, to think and plan, to learn and grow. If we don't take time to sharpen the axe, we will become dull and lose our effectiveness. Awareness is vital. To know when it is time to stop and sharpen yourself. You may still be getting by, but is it requiring more effort? Just think how much more you could be doing with a sharper axe and that same additional effort. For some people, the greater effort will actually burn them out to the point that they will be ineffective. People who work with tools will tell you that working with a dull, unsharpened blade is more dangerous because the tool is being pushed beyond its designed limits. People can also be dangerous when pushed beyond their limits. "If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend the first four hours sharpening the axe."
