Bronze Rhino
"Fleet of Foot"
Dimensions: W 6” H 6.5” D 12.5”
Fleet of Foot is one of the most technically assured of Sally Amoore’s bronze works. Three of the rhino’s hooves are lifted off the sculpture’s base foundation. Despite being technically difficult to achieve in clay, the finished bronze model superbly masters the sense of movement and energy that are so vital to a rhino’s existence. The speed at which the rhino is travelling is accentuated by the one remaining back foot with which the rhino dynamically propels itself forward. The rhino’s proximity to the ground helps to emphasise the enormous weight of these animals and the huge reserves of power needed during their moments of rapid movement.
One of Sally Amoore’ most dynamic bronze sculptures, Fleet of Foot is a fantastic portrayal of a powerful animal caught suspended in a moment of action. Most notably, the sculpture manages to express the unexpected speed and agility with which such an enormously heavy animal is able to cover the plains.
