Resin Elephant
"The Last Farewell"

Dimensions: W 8” H 10.5” D 11”

The Last Farewell movingly depicts a scene between an elephant mother and her dead calf. The sculpture conveys enormous pathos, poignantly portraying the moment when a mother is forced to accept the death of her infant and bid it a final farewell. The mother’s trunk gently nuzzles the child’s neck, symbolising the moment at which the mother says her mournful goodbye.

The mother’s foot delicately lingers on the hindquarters of the infant, as if to reassure herself one last time that her child has departed from the world. The sculpture is also notable for its unusual focus, which highlights the central subject matter whilst ignoring the mother’s body, intensifying the enormous pathos depicted in the artwork.

Perhaps one of Sally Amoore’s most emotionally charged pieces, The Last Farewell conveys an image of both suffering and mourning in the animal world, whilst simultaneously expressing the harsh, existential realities faced by animals in the wild.
