Resin Stag |
"Stag"
Dimensions: W 4” H 15” D 11” This bronze sculpture highlights one of Sally Amoore’s primary concerns as a sculptor of wildlife. The tentatively raised front hoof, blended together with the expression of alert caution on the face of the stag, captures an animal at the precise moment when it first senses danger. The stag’s attention is fixed on an unseen object of threat in the distance, his foot caught in the middle of its forward movement, as if all of its attention is focused on the sense of sight. The unknown element of the threat – the idea that the onlooker cannot see what terrorises the stag – leads the viewer to question whether it is not man himself who ultimately threatens the animal kingdom. With this sculpture, we are presented with the animal kingdom in its most essential of forms. The essence of survival, and the constant manifestations of threat that impinge on this survival, run throughout Sally Amoore’s work. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the stag’s necessary, instinctual choice between fight and flight. |
