Bronze Gorilla
"Future Unknown"
Dimensions: W 10” H 15” D 10.5”
This sculpture is a direct comment on the diminishing number of wild gorillas. Hounded by poachers and threatened by captivity and diminishing numbers, the gorilla is an endangered animal that lives its life in constant threat of extinction. The title of the work – Future Unknown – immediately forces the viewer to recognise the instability of the gorilla's existence in the wild, categorising the animal within the broader framework of other endangered animals. The limp hand, open stance, and the right leg tucked beneath his haunches, all serve to lend the gorilla an air of resignation. In addition, the artist seems to be disempowering the stereotypical portrayal of the gorilla as a brutal, destructive beast. The sad, pleading glaze in his eyes speaks of untold suffering and forces the viewer to sympathise with the tender side of a gorilla’s nature.
The sculpture is boldly masculine, highlighting the patriarchal society to which the gorilla belongs. The wrinkled skin around the eyes points to the gorilla's misery, adding authenticity to the mood of resignation in which he has been exquisitely captured by the artist.
