UK is Tenth Biggest Direct Marketer
The UK has been revealed as the tenth largest user of unsolicited marketing emails, according to recent statistics.

A survey by internet security company Sophos found the UK to be responsible for 1.8 per cent of global spamming, although the US uses direct marketing over ten times more.

The US produces 23.2 per cent of the world's spam, making American marketers the most common users of the strategy, while China accounts for 20 per cent of unsolicited emails.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, said that the US government is trying to reduce the scale of direct email marketing campaigns.

"Since the introduction of the 'Can-Spam' legislation in 2004, we've seen a regular quarter-on-quarter drop in the proportion of spam coming from the US – until now, that is," he commented.

Although many people get frustrated by spam, effective email marketing campaigns tend to target a smaller group of recipients who are likely to be interested in the product or service being advertised. And the fact is – they work.

Research by the Direct Mail Information Service revealed that every £1 spent on direct marketing generates £14 of new business and email marketing has been proven to be a highly cost-effective way of generating new leads, enquiries and sales.

The UK market for email marketing platforms and services is expected to grow to £178 million by the end of 2006, indicating that email is very much the new form of direct mail.
