Life Health Care Communications
The Hernes Oak in Winkfield, which is named after the famous Herne the Hunter, is due to be the new home for advertising agency Life Health Care Communications.
The historical public house which closed in January was sold by Enterprise Inns due to lack of local support. The new owners which currently have their offices in Orchard Lea, Winkfield Lane are not concerned with the rumours that the building is haunted as it is thought that their present office is also shared with a few ghosts.
Life Health Care Communications is waiting for planning permission before moving in. They hope to keep at much character as they can in the building, and will leave the front of the pub as it is.
Herne was a huntsman for King Richard II in the 14th Century. He saved the King's life when he was attacked by a cornered white hart, but was mortally wounded himself. A local wizard is thought to have brought him back to health using his magical powers, which entailed tying the dead animal's antlers on Herne's head.
In return, however, Herne had to give up his hunting skills. The other king's huntsmen framed him as a poacher and as a result he lost the favor of the king. He was found the next day, hanging dead from a lone oak tree. The tree Herne hanged himself on was chopped down by King Richard II but a replacement was planted in 1906 by King Edward VII to mark the tragedy, which can be seen today in Windsor Forest.
Rumour has it the ghost of Herne returns every winter to ride on his black horse around Windsor Forest.
