How to Market Yourself
As a self-employed professional, marketing your company can be a difficult challenge. Writing letters/e-mails and making telephone calls to talk about yourself and your business can be an uncomfortable task. You may fear rejection or find it hard to take criticism. To help you overcome these thoughts and feelings take a look at the ideas below:
• Choose yourself a reward for completing a difficult marketing task. The expectation of receiving that special bonus may just be the push you need. It could be something as small as an evening out with friends or the latest gadget you’ve been wanting for ages.
• Marketing activities may bring to mind rejection, dissatisfaction and a host of other catastrophes. Accept these thoughts and confront them. Come to terms with what you are afraid of and work out a way to push through them. This may take time. Perhaps you need to practice your selling technique or take a course in how to present yourself to an audience.
Take the time to feel confident about your marketing techniques; it will pay off in the end.
• When you receive a positive response from a client, ensure that you keep these to hand. When you are feeling down, take time to re-read these, it will help you realise your strengths and encourage you to get back out there.
• If you find yourself feeling low and isolated, carry out some of your marketing tasks from a different location. You could meet up with a friend or colleague and take it in turns to feed off each others ideas.
• When you are unable to move forward with your next marketing strategy, think about where you what to go and why. Go back to the basics and re-create your vision.
Write out a business statement on how you hope to achieve a successful business and what satisfaction this would bring. Then decide on how this can be achieved and get going.
