Search giant invests in new coverage technology
Google has announced that it is to invest in the UK based femtocell firm Ubiquisys, according to reports.
Although the total invested by the search engine giant has not been disclosed, the company did state that £12 million will be ploughed into the firm overall in the latest round of investments, reports zdnet.
Femtocells are mini-base stations that aim to boost coverage for a users telephone signal, often installed in properties, the publication states.
Co-founder at Ubiquisys Will Franks said that Google is looking to make broadband more accessible to all users.
"They see femtocell technology as a very good way of doing that for mobile phones, so they are investing in companies, like us, who do that," he commented.
He added that a number of firms are currently testing the methods.
In related news, the mobile phone company Vodafone - which is based in Berkshire - recently announced increased sales.
