Shoppers and businesses 'benefiting from internet'
A new report from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has suggested that both businesses and shoppers are beginning to see the benefits of the internet.

According to the body, the UK online market for shopping is believed to worth in the region of £21.4 billion, with 20 million people shopping online in 2006.

The survey also contended that a number of businesses could offer more in online marketing channels by aiding customers with information on things such as security and online privacy.

Moreover, the OFT said that it wishes to address some of the pressing issues in the market over the coming months such as helping businesses to develop newer online channels to increase transparency.

It also wishes to boost consumer confidence in the sector, it claimed.

"The internet has added a welcome new dimension to competition in the economy, as well as providing convenience for shoppers and new opportunities to compare prices and find new products," stated chief executive at the OFT John Fingleton.

He added that the body is committed to working with businesses to achieve online success.

Recent findings from IAB Europe suggested that online marketing spend is greatest among businesses in Europe.
