The Growth in Online Advertising
A recent report indicated that internet advertising revenue grew by 35% in the last year, suggesting advertisers are becoming increasingly confident in the online channel.
The findings of the report, from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP’s new media group for the Interactive Advertising Bureau, suggest marketers are catching on to the way online media can target and engage an audience. Search marketing, display advertising, banner ads, classifieds, and lead generation have all continued to grow steadily.
Indeed keyword search accounted for over 40% of online advertising spending last year, with display advertising accounting for 22%. 18% of ad spending went to online classifieds, with lead generation accounting for another 8%. Rich media advertisements took a 7% share of the market.
The figures suggest that more businesses are taking advantage of online advertising to promote their products and services, realising what the internet industry already knew – the online market is bigger, more lucrative and as yet, relatively untapped.
The Recruitment sector was one of the first to see the benefits of online advertising, and has become the best performing sector in terms of spend (over 20% of the total market). The Finance and Automotive industries have also increased their spend, and the most significant trend comes from the Entertainment sector, which has begun to exploit the medium in an increasingly sophisticated and creative style.
Industry experts point to the widespread adoption of broadband in homes and offices as a significant factor that has contributed to the growth in the online advertising market. People are spending longer online and feel comfortable with the concept of online adverts.
