Holidaymakers Prefer to Book Online
Summer is almost upon us and many of us will already be looking forward to holidays spent on the beach or at the poolside. But how are we booking those holidays in the first place? According to research from Nielsen//NetRatings most of us are opting to book our annual hols online.
Research by Nielsen/NetRatings revealed that over half of internet users choose to book their holidays online, with only 7% heading for the high street travel agency to research and book. A further 9% still prefer to make their travel arrangements face to face with their local travel agent BUT will have carried out their research at home first, using the internet.
An additional 17% choose to book over the telephone, again after carefully doing their holiday research online first. The most popular type of holiday for online bookings is the classic beach holiday, closely followed by long-haul trips, cruises, and fly-drives. Interestingly, activity holidays tend to be booked in travel agents rather than online.
Over 60% of online holidaymakers take at least 2 major holidays every year. The over 55 group are most likely to take frequent holidays and many will book at the last minute. The research certainly reveals how much the internet has changed our approach to booking holidays and travel arrangements. An analyst at Nielsen/NetRatings said “The travel industry provides a wonderful reminder, if anyone still needed one, of how integral the Internet has become in the life of today’s consumer”.
