Consumers Become Marketers for New Rocky Movie
Film company MGM are collaborating with a leading viral marketing agency in a bid to promote the upcoming movie release ‘Rocky Balboa’. In a bid to step away from traditional and often obtrusive marketing initiatives, MGM have chosen to generate an online buzz in anticipation of the new movie by offering consumers a selection of free downloadable online applications.
MGM have enlisted the help of email software design team Incredimail to develop a number of branded applications to encourage consumers to promote the upcoming “Rocky Balboa” movie amongst their circle of friends, work colleagues, and family – viral marketing working at its best.
What do we mean by branded applications? Things like wallpapers and screensavers, email backgrounds and sound effects, and themed skins for toolbars. All branded up with the appropriate “Rocky Balboa” artwork. Users can even set the movie’s theme tune to play whenever new email arrives in their inbox.
The logic behind this form of marketing is that, by strategically placing the brand on frequently used applications such as email, consumers are more likely to pass the message on to their network – thus maximising the strength of the brand and ensuring maximum consumer exposure.
As consumers pass out their favourite branded content to others by email, it effectively turns them into online marketers, but without the typical corporate approach that can often switch off recipients. In short, a branded, free application, passed to you by a friend or colleague, is more likely to be welcomed as a fun item rather than a piece of marketing.
