Reading Single Homeless Project Mission Statement |
|
RSHP is dedicated to ending social exclusion caused by homelessness. RSHP is determined to provide the standard of housing and support needed to enable its clients to achieve their full potential in life.
Reading Single Homeless Project (RSHP) is a small independent charity that strives to provide affordable supported housing to vulnerable people at risk or with a history of homelessness. The people helped by RSHP are from a range of backgrounds, but all have experienced social exclusion and rejection. Each of the people helped by RSHP has lacked a strong sustainable support network and has been unable to cope on his/her own. Some have fled domestic violence, but had nowhere to run; others have left institutional care, but need support if they are to be able to live on their own; some are ex-offenders whose release into the community is dependent upon them having an address with one-to-one support; and others have complex problems that make it difficult for them to sustain a tenancy without help, advice, guidance and consistent support. Reading’s booming economy has forced house prices to rise and has contributed towards the town becoming a homeless hotspot. Reading has become a magnet for new business and “luxury housing” that creates additional pressure on existing accommodation and inflates prices even higher although Reading holds some of the most deprived wards in the country. The crime rate in Reading has risen significantly in recent years and there has been a sharp increase in the amount of drug-related crime in the town. These developments have contributed significantly to the higher than average homeless problem in Reading and have created an even more vital role for RSHP. RSHP’s client group comprises vulnerable and socially excluded people who need additional support in order to maximise their ability to live independently. RSHP’s clients include people with substance misuse problems, people with mental ill health, care leavers, ex offenders, people on probation, people fleeing domestic violence, single homeless and the elderly. RSHP - Responding to the need Currently RSHP can house up to 100 people, but the need in Reading continues to grow. As a second-stage housing agency, RSHP strives to act as a stepping-stone for people moving on from short-term hostels to more independent living. To do this, RSHP is committed to providing tailored support to its tenants to provide them with the skills, confidence and ability they need to take greater responsibility for their actions and understand the role that they play in shaping their future. RSHP works to motivate its clients to work towards solutions and set realistic objectives. Working with a varied client group with a range of support needs, RSHP is well-placed to offer consistent, person-centred support and can ensure that specialist support services are accessed as appropriate. Combined with this, RSHP aims to help its client group access education and training opportunities whilst working to enhance the quality of life of some of the most disadvantaged and socially excluded people living in Reading. RSHP recognises that providing a roof over someone’s head is not always enough to provide a realistic opportunity for that person to progress to independent living and a sustainable tenancy. However, RSHP also recognises that secure, affordable and appropriate housing can offer the stability needed to give that person a realistic chance of succeeding. For this reason, RSHP is committed to providing a range of good quality housing that engenders a sense of pride and independence and offers the chance of a fresh star. www.rshp.co.uk |
