Prince of Wales Biography
He might be Duke of Cornwall, but he’s getting hitched right here in Berkshire. We get the lowdown on the lives of Charles and Camilla, ahead of the big day on April 8th.
Did you know that Charles Philip Arthur George is Earl of Chester, Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland, as well as The Prince of Wales? Born in Buckingham Palace on 14th November 1948, he became heir apparent at the age of three on his Mother’s accession to the throne.
He was schooled at Hill House in West London, rather than by a tutor as was the tradition, and then became a boarder at Cheam School here in Berkshire. At the age of nine, he was given the title of The Prince of Wales. Charles left Berkshire to attend Gordonstoun School in Scotland, spending two terms as an exchange student in Melbourne. Leaving Gordonstoun with A levels, he was off to Cambridge University to study Archaeology and Anthropology (and, later, History) at Trinity College. In 1971, the Prince began his naval career, like his father, grandfather and great-grandfathers before him. He qualified as a helicopter pilot in 1974 and joined the 845 Naval Air Squadron.
The Prince is perhaps best known for his charitable interests. Committed to developing the nation’s talents, he is Patron of almost 360 organisations ranging in focus from social issues to national heritage. He has 17 core charities, most of which he has founded himself. These include the Prince’s Trust, Business in the Community and The Prince of Wales Arts & Kids Foundation.
In 1981, Charles married Lady Diana Spencer and the marriage produced two heirs – Prince William (born 21st June 1982) and Prince Harry (born 15th September 1984). The boys are second and third in line to the throne.
Clarence House announced the marriage of Charles and Mrs. Camilla Parker Bowles on 10th February 2005. The wedding will take place on Friday 8th April right here in Berkshire at the Guildhall, Windsor.
