Royal Wedding Anniversary

Royal Wedding Anniversary: Charles and Camilla, One Year On

April 9th marks the first anniversary of the Royal Wedding of Charles and Camilla in Windsor’s own Guildhall. Nicola Joyce takes a look at how public affection for the couple has grown over the year….

When Charles and Camilla married on a spring day last April at the Windsor Guildhall, some of the public still needed convincing about the Prince’s second marriage. However, 12 months on, it’s a different story. Camilla has settled into the role of Queen Consort in Waiting with style and flair, transforming herself from waxed jackets and wellingtons to a vision in Philip Treacy hats and royal heirloom jewelry. She has proved herself to be a true companion to the Prince, accompanying him on tours of the Middle East and India over the past year, and has settled into her new role as naturally as the Prince accepts his royal destiny. Received rapturously wherever they go, the shift in public perception and affection was perhaps most notable at a local school in the village of Pendoylan in the Vale of Glamorgan. At this visit, shortly after the wedding in 2005, Camilla was given a genuinely warm and grand reception. The Welsh adored Charles’s first wife, the late Diana, so it must have come as a great relief to both the Prince and Camilla that the Duchess was well received here.

Prince Charles is clearly more contented than he has been in many years, his two sons have accepted their new step-mother with open arms and the public now seem satisfied to let the Prince and his Duchess get on with their happily married life in peace. I suspect that, looking back on their first year of marriage, they could not have hoped for more. Here’s wishing them plenty more years of happiness.
