RC Windsor St George Receives British Airways Community Voluntee

Chris Davies, President of Rotary Club Windsor St George has been awarded £1000 from the British Airways Community Volunteering Scheme.

The British Airways Community Relations Department provides support for staff who are involved in voluntary organisations around the world. One of the schemes they have provided in recent years is called "The British Airways Community Volunteering Award Scheme", where staff members involved in charitable causes, can apply for a grant.

Having recently read about the infant mortality rate in Africa due to Malaria, Chris sought clarification from the African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF, better known for their Flying Doctor Service in East & Central Africa), He decided to apply for an award for the purchase of treated mosquito nets to help slow down the spread of this disease, which is a greater killer of children in Africa than AIDS and is preventable.

AMREF are short of malaria nets in Tanzania in the area where the Rotary Club Windsor St George have helped provide safe drinking water for close to 6,000 people in a district some 70km south of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Chris submitted a case to the BA Community Relations Department and was very flattered, honoured and pleased to receive a cheque for £1,000 from the CEO of BA, Willie Walsh.

Chris said "What I am particularly proud of, is that through the combined effort between Rotary in Windsor and Dar es Salaam, AMREF and British Airways, several hundred children should have a better chance of avoiding contracting Malaria."
