Camp Fire With A Difference |

At a presentation evening last Thursday, at the Pines Hotel in Burnham, Slough Scouts gave a double-barrelled view of their activities to Slough Rotarians. In return the Scouts received a handsome sum towards their International Fund, aimed at helping less well off scouts to participate in expeditions outside of the UK. Mark Ashworth, Deputy District Commissioner for Slough, gave an upbeat view of how scouting is developing in the town with an increasing number of young people wanting to take part and two new groups being set up. The second ‘barrel’ was delivered by Graham Hartley, a member of the Scout network for Slough and East Berkshire, who showed how small groups accomplished international activities. Graham’s own group of four scouts took on a 150-mile cycle trek through forest and lakeland close to the Russian border in Finland. As well as experiencing rough country survival skills they also completed a research exercise amongst local Finns they met along the route. Helping these ‘slide and sound’ presentations was Tim Haggett, Assistant District Commissioner for Slough Scouts. The picture shows the President of Slough Rotary, Dr Surrinder Kumar, warming hands with the Scout Leaders, around an unusual campfire, none the less warming for its pounds replacing the traditional sticks." |
