Young and young at heart for Slough Rotary
Picture: After the investiture ceremony Slough Rotary’s three newest members are pictured with their proposers, from left to right, John Winyard, Immediate Past president, Shaku Kalla, Chris Dahl, President Surrinder Kumar and Philip Astles.

During a packed meeting last Thursday evening at the club’s regular venue, The Pines Hotel in Burnham, the Rotary club of Slough invested its two youngest members, both thirty year olds. Chris Dahl, a Stockbroker and Financial Adviser, and Phil Astles, a solicitor, were invested by club President Surrinder Kumar in a formal ceremony that was both dignified but full of the good humour typical of the club. Chris runs the Windsor office of the American stockbrokers, Edward Jones and Philip is Managing Partner at the Slough office of KiddRapinet.

It was a memorable occasion in many respects but importantly also present was Dr Shaku Kalla, a consultant in obstetrics at Wexham Park Hospital, who was herself invested two weeks earlier and two visiting prospective members, both young women and from Durban in South Africa and both, like Chris and Philip, in their thirties.

Introducing these ‘two young men’ their proposer, Immediate Past President of Slough Rotary, John Winyard, recalled Philip’s early service club experience being roped in by his grandfather to run a roll-a-penny stall and Chris’s transformation from a Vicarage Road, Watford upbringing to now being an avid supporter of Manchester United. Clearly both have already travelled far and are looking forward to the challenge of living the club’s motto of ‘getting more out of life through working together for others’.

President Kumar commented, “This is an important milestone for the club, taking us back to Rotary’s roots when almost all of the members were young business people”. “The first Rotary Club was set up over 100 years ago in Chicago, USA by a young man, Paul Harris, who felt there was more to life than just business and persuaded his friends and colleagues to meet at one another’s offices and today Chris and Phil join over one million Rotarians worldwide in some 250 countries”.
