A century of service – a new century of success |
|
Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community's business and professional people. Royal Windsor is fortunate to have two active Rotary Clubs; meeting lunchtime and evening.
There are 20 Rotary Clubs within 8 miles of Windsor, over 60 in Rotary District 1090 (spanning the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Middlesex and Oxfordshire in central southern England) and over 1,800 in the British Isles – all serving tirelessly with the Rotary motto in mind, “Service Above Self”. Members of a Rotary Club usually live or work in the area surrounding the club. Each Rotary Club operates autonomously within the Rotary family and selects causes it wishes to support each year. Clubs welcome membership enquiries from those who want to combine fun with friendship and make a difference in the community. Business often includes a talk on a subject of general interest by an outside speaker. Visit District 1090 website www.rotary1090.org
One hundred years of Rotary fellowship and service is great cause for celebration In 100 years, Rotary has grown from a small club of four members to a worldwide network of men and women who share a common vision for a better world. It was founded in Chicago by Paul Harris in February 1905. The name 'Rotary' was derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices. The world’s first service organisation, Rotary has a long history of helping those in need and uniting people of different cultures and beliefs. Through the work of individual Rotary clubs, and through the programmes of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation, Rotary is making the world a better place. In Great Britain and Ireland there are about 59,000 members in more than 1,830 clubs. In the last year more than £20 million was raised by Rotarians in the British Isles for charitable causes. In addition Rotarians' gave more than14 million man hours of service, in support of community projects at a local, national and international level. Since 1947, the Rotary Foundation has awarded more than £1000 million in humanitarian and educational grants, which are administered at the local level. "To live in a better world I realized I had to team up with people who shared my goals and were willing to make them a reality." Gustavo Giay, Rotarian |
