Communication skills

Good communication skills are crucial. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively marks the difference between an employable graduate with career potential and one who is unable to function well in the workplace and in social settings. Communication skills are just one part of wider key skills learning and combine with other skills to give young people the best possible start in their working life.

Teaching young people effective communication skills gives them the confidence to be able to communicate with adults, meaning that they will be able to connect and converse with managers and senior level colleagues in the workplace and go on to be good managers themselves. It makes them better able to cope well at interview and teaches them how to put themselves across well in all manner of settings.

Communication skills are also essential in social settings and in college. If a young person is a good communicator, they will be able to research and present work more effectively in higher education, be able to work better in a team and have the ability to put across their thoughts and opinions more convincingly.

The communications skills taught by The Working Knowledge Group’s Ride the Wave programme cover verbal communication, writing reports, using the telephone, giving presentations, writing emails and public speaking. Communications skills have a lot to do with confidence. Arms with the tools that wider key skills learning gives them, young people are able to go out into the community with greater self-confidence and a better sense of self-worth.
