Every Child Matters
Every Child Matters (ECM) is a government programme which focuses on improving and maintaining the wellbeing of all children up to the age of 19. Its multi-agency approach aims to unite organisations and individuals including schools and colleges, social workers, health professionals and the police so that better support can be offered to young people.
The main goal of ECM is improving outcomes for all children. These various outcomes include making a positive contribution to society and achieving economic wellbeing.
Teaching wider key skills in schools and colleges makes a direct and positive impact on young people’s ability to engage with the community, their ability and desire to make a positive contribution to society and the likelihood of them achieving economic wellbeing as adults. The Ride the Wave programme from The Working Knowledge Group actively engages students in learning, widening their participation and creating cross-college student activity. Everyone have something important to gain from teaching wider key skills. Students benefit from a wider, more vocation education which encourages them to flourish as employable individuals. Teachers and staff benefit from having specialist knowledge embedded into their existing teaching skills so that they can respond to the challenges of a changing education landscape. Education establishments benefit from better performance data for their Framework for Excellence and an increased retention rate in their students.
