Big Kids Bike Ride 2008 – John O’Groats to Lands End
The Pursuit NHA Team : Lancaster to Whitchurch, Shropshire Early one Lancashire morning in May the Pursuit NHA team started off on their leg of the John O’Groats to Lands End route!! We set off from Lancaster on a sunny Saturday morning waving goodbye to the Mattel team who set off in the opposite direction! For some of the team pre-ride training included hours in the gym, putting in the saddle time and gaining road experience; for others it involved practising changing gears in the car park that morning as they sat on their bikes for the first time! The sun didn’t last long and by late morning the rain had set in although the team remained in good spirits manoeuvring the heavy traffic through Preston, Wigan and Warrington on their way south. Cycling through Warrington was certainly faster than driving as the support vehicles struggled to keep up the pace!! The Pursuit NHA empire almost came to an end as we lost our Chief Executive along the way (unintentionally of course) – but ever resourceful Andy with no phone, money, credit cards or map managed to make contact and rejoin the team further down the route (after adding a few more miles to his total)! Cycling south unfortunately didn’t mean all down hill as the team quickly realised – but what goes up must come down and there were more than a few happy faces as they flew downhill (especially on the lovely long down hill road into Whitchurch, where luckily there were no speed cameras). Repairs to bikes were few with our very own 4th emergency service repair man, Vance, making quick work of changing tyres to ensure we were back on the road in no time! Everyone in the team surpassed their expectations by cycling far more than they expected despite the driving wind, rain and hills….. and despite the actual distance being closer to 92 miles than the original 80! We would like to thank our sponsors Weetabix, Wrigley, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Hertz and everyone else who supported us in our fundraising efforts. Thank you to the riders who pushed themselves through the pain barrier to complete the distance and to the support team who picked up tired cyclists and provided much needed water, mars bars and moral support along the route. All agree that the event although hardwork and resulting in aching muscles was great fun and enjoyed by all….anyone ready to join us for next year??
