Rics calls for new rural homes
The British countryside is in danger of becoming a property "playground for the rich", the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) has claimed.
The organisation believes that, unless steps are taken to tackle the shortage of affordable housing in rural locations, local people will be unable to afford houses in their own area.
Figures show that 105,000 people moved to the countryside in 2005, representing a 25 per cent increase over the previous five years, and Rics' head of public policy Brian Berry has called for more affordable housing to be built to accommodate local first-time buyers.
However, he warned: "New housing in the countryside must not repeat the mistakes of the past with poor standards of design which has been so destructive to the beauty of the countryside."
Mr Berry insisted that rural areas are "not a museum" and must adapt to changing circumstances, even if that requires developing on greenfield sites if necessary.
Recent research from Knight Frank confirmed that the country house market had ended 2006 on a high, particularly in the south of England, with growth of 11.2 per cent in prime country house prices.
