Harsh words for media over Middleton affair

Following coverage over the weekend of the ending of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s relationship, Newbury MP, Richard Benyon has strong words for the national media.

The Middleton family live in Richard Benyon’s constituency and he feels very strongly that they have been hounded by the paparazzi and subjected to lazy journalism and idle speculation from across the media.

Richard said, “This family have had to suffer horrendous intrusion into their lives. This weekend photographers have been camped outside their home and they have been subjected to some of the most unjustified coverage in the weekend press.

"I am sure that Kate Middleton’s parents just want what every parent wants: for their daughter to be happy. I think it is really sad that the media have not learnt a thing since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales .

"Anyone who forms any relationship with a member of the Royal Family is treated disgracefully. They and their families have to expect to be hounded by paparazzi and headline seeking journalists. I have written to the Editor of the Mail on Sunday whose coverage was the just disgraceful.

How can we expect our future King to form normal relationships with normal people when we have a media in this country that is so out of control? Other countries manage to give such people greater protection.

"Surely it is time for our own privacy laws to be looked at. The time has come for some change in the law to secure the privacy of individuals who, though no fault of their own, find themselves in the media spotlight.”
