Wilson welcomes Madjeski as new uni chancellor
|
Reading East MP and former local University student, Rob Wilson, has hailed the news of the appointment of John Madejski as Chancellor of Reading University as: “Great news for Reading and great news for the University”.
The University of Reading straddles the boundary between the Reading East and Wokingham Parliamentary constituencies, with the bulk of the academic site and the halls of residence being in Reading East. Rob said, “I am delighted at the news of John Madejski’s appointment. He is a great force for good in Reading and a great benefactor of so many institutions locally. I am sure that the University will go from strength to strength under his Chancellorship. "John has been very successful in business and a great philanthropist, but through Reading Football Club he has put the Town on the international map. No-one should underestimate the positive influence that Premiership football has had internationally for Reading . "The vice-Chancellor told me that travelling in Korea few had heard of Oxford or Cambridge , but many had heard of Reading thanks to Premiership Football! It is quite remarkable what John Madejski has achieved for Reading over the years and this is a wonderful recognition of his continuing positive influence." "I would also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Lord Carrington the outgoing Chancellor. He was Foreign Secretary in Margaret Thatcher’s government and has played a great part in ensuring that Reading University is the success that it is today - now in the Top 200 Universities Worldwide! "His 15 years as Chancellor have seen the University develop an international reputation as a centre of excellence not least in the field of cybernetics. I am sure that John Madejski will bring a new set of skills and business acumen to the benefit of all.” |
