Part-time defence secretary
|
Just two weeks after questioning former Prime Minister Tony Blair over the third Thames bridge, Reading East MP Rob Wilson was on his feet to question new Prime Minister Gordon Brown over his decision to add the role of Scottish Secretary to that of Secretary of State for Defence.
In a packed House Rob asked “Prime Minister, why is the Secretary of State for Defence now considered a part-time job?” The Prime Minister blustered and floundered and dug into his briefing book before coming up with an obscure quotation from Rob’s website about the need to be “positive”. He completely failed to address the main point that whilst our troops are engaged in conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan , the Secretary of State for Defence should be focussed totally on their welfare and equipment needs. Rob said, “I was amazed at how out of his depth Gordon Brown appeared today. For someone who has been at the top table of Government for the last 10 years he was staggeringly ill-prepared. Only recently a Reading serviceman paid the ultimate price while on active service and yet the Prime Minister seems to think that the job of Secretary of State for Defence should be a part-time job. I do hope that he will reflect on my question and give our troops the support that they need and a full time Secretary of State.” |
