Rob Wilson requests PM intervention on third Thames crossing
Rob Wilson, Member of Parliament for Reading East, today followed up his question at yesterday’s Prime Minister’s Question time, by writing to the Prime Minister to ask him to intervene to break the deadlock over the much needed third Thames crossing.
In the light of the continuing refusal of South Oxfordshire DC and Oxfordshire CC to agree a plan with Reading and Wokingham Borough Councils, Rob has asked the Prime Minister if he could exert some national Government pressure or even support a small revision to the Borough and County boundaries. The boundaries between Oxfordshire and Berkshire have been moved on a number of occasions in the last century and the change needed to ensure that a third crossing could be built would be minor. Rob said: “One transport issue that unites all parties in Reading and Wokingham is the need for a third Thames crossing. I am asking the Prime Minister to use the influence available to him to help move this project forward. "If the neighbouring authorities remain intransigent then another possibility would be to seek a minor boundary change to bring the necessary land under Reading Borough’s control. "I very much hope that before he leaves office that the Prime Minister will help me to break this long standing deadlock that is undoubtedly holding back Reading ’s further development.” Rob has already been influential in turning around the situation regarding Reading Station. Two years ago progress had stalled and no investment was expected. Rob’s intervention has led to a position where an announcement concerning a huge investment is expected imminently. Rob has also protected Reading ’s chances of being the terminus for CrossRail. He held a Westminster Hall debate in January 2006 raising all Reading ’s strategic transport issues; Heathrow connection, M4 Junction 11, Reading Station and the Third Thames Bridge . He has constantly raised these issues at Ministerial Question Times and in letters to Ministers. 22/06/07
