Rob Wilson praises innovative training scheme at Reading prison
|
Rob Wilson, Member of Parliament for Reading East, today highlighted an innovative and successful private sector led scheme whereby young offenders are trained whilst in prison and guaranteed jobs when they complete their sentence.
The programme has led to a fall in re-offending rates from over 70% to below 7% for young offenders leaving Reading prison (Youth Offender Institute). With the national cost of re-offending estimated at £12bn per annum Rob suggested to Justice Minister Gerry Sutcliffe that this was a better example to follow than the early release of prisoners announced by the Government today. Rob said "I welcome any scheme which is effective in reducing crime. Clearly this example of the private sector intervening to train and employ young offenders has an excellent track record. I am pleased that the Minister is aware of this scheme but I would like to see it being encouraged across the public sector considering the remarkable results it achieves." 19/06/07 |
