Campaigners against violent internet pornography, Liz Longhurst, David Lepper MP and Martin Salter MP today met with new Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker to receive an update on the progress being made towards creating a new offence outlawing the possession of violent and abusive pornography to bring such material in line with the existing laws on child porn.
In response to the 50,000 signature petition presented to Parliament last year by Reading West MP Martin Salter and an extensive campaign spearheaded by Reading mum Liz Longhurst whose daughter Jane was brutally murdered in March 2003 in Brighton by internet porn addict Graham Coutts, the government announced a consultation which ended on December 2nd. This included introducing a new law covering the possession of images of both necrophilia and bestiality, as well as extreme sexual violence.
Liz Longhurst said:
“I was very encouraged by what I heard from both the minister and his officials. It was particularly kind of Mr Coaker to find the time to meet with me and to reassure me that despite changes in the Ministerial team, the Home Office still fully intends to introduce new laws along the lines set out in their consultation last year”.
Martin Salter said:
“Although at this stage no precise details have been published, Vernon Coaker made it clear that an official Government response to their excellent consultation proposals on violent internet pornography should be produced before the start of the summer parliamentary recess. I am very confident that we are moving in the right direction although we will have to wait for a formal announcement to Parliament.”
Liz Longhurst added:
“A new law treating this ghastly and abusive material in the same way as child pornography would represent a fitting tribute to my lovely daughter Jane who lost her life at the hands of a self-confessed addict of violent internet porn”.
Vernon Coaker is Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Policing, Security and Community Safety and took over from Paul Goggins in May 2006.
