People & Showbiz 1976 The National Theatre on the South Bank was officially opened by the Queen. 1988 Snooker player Steve Davis received an MBE from the Queen for services to his sport. 'Sky At Night ' presenter Patrick Moore was awarded a CBE 2 decades after being made an OBE. 1995 Cliff Richard received a knighthood from the Queen. General Events 1927 After a long and bitter dispute, the flag of South Africa was agreed by General J.B.M Hertzog. It incorporated both the Union Jack and the vierkler flags of both the old Boer Republics. 1951 Winston Churchill's Conservative Party won the General Election. During this election Margaret Roberts(to become Margaret Thatcher) became the youngest candidate to stand at a General Electin. She failed to win a seat. 1960 The first electronic wrist watch, the Bulova Accutron tuning-fork watch, was introduced in the US. 1996 Pope John Paul II risked the wrath of the religious right by announcing that Darwin's 'Theory of Evolution' was comptible with Christian faith. Evolution had always been denounced by the church because it was incompatible with Genesis. 1997 Despite earlier announcements that Britain was not set to join the single European currency for at least 5 years, chancellor Gordon Brown told British Business to prepare themselves to deal with the currency when the rest of Europe converted.
