YouTube Set to Overtake BBC
The official BBC website www.bbc.co.uk has been the top ranking entertainment website in the UK for over 2 years. It still is. But industry experts are expecting the balance of power to shift, possibly within a few weeks, as YouTube craves an ever-bigger slice of the entertainment pie.

It seems likely that, in the Entertainment category, YouTube is on target to overtake the BBC website in terms of total UK site visitors. This is the view according to online industry statistics specialists Hitwise. The astonishing rise in popularity of YouTube, which focuses on user-generated content across a vast list of genres, has made it one of the internet’s biggest success stories.

The recent figures compiled by Hitwise tell an interesting story. BBC.co.uk ranked 14th across all categories of website (not just entertainment), accounting for 0.82% of UK internet visits in the week the statistics were collected. This compared with 0.81% for YouTube which earned them a 25th place ranking overall. However, it’s a gap that appears to be closing fast. The BBC’s lead on YouTube is down to a mere 1.6% compared to 37% three months ago – and 131% 6 months ago. It’s a trend that looks set to continue.

It’s not all bad news for the for the BBC - UK visits to BBC.co.uk are actually up and have been growing steadily for some time. For example, in the period from May 2006 to May 2007 total site visitors have increased by some 13%. However, during the same period, visitors to YouTube have jumped a massive 669%, contributing to the general increase in popularity of entertainment sites which, for the first time, overtook the Shopping and Classifieds category for site visits.
